Illiana Expressway
The proposed Illiana toll road will fall just east of Hwy 421, which is right by the front door of the proposed intermodal facilty. You have to admit, they have stitched this whole scheme together very well.

La Porte City Bypass Plans
The outer loop is a near freeway status road running east - west between 300 South and 400 South, kinking north to the airport, then curving up on either side to meet the I-80.

Now for some speculation - With an upgrade to Hwy 39 from Hwy 6 on up to the outer loop by the airport, and you have a link from the Intermodal to the Interstate system that negates the immediate need for the Illiana! Now let's take another look. A multi-lane road now meets a rail intermodal.... near a (currently) small airport. So what's next - an air freight terminal? There's a lot of "available land" near the airport for new runways. A fully fledged intermodal is not just about trains and trucks - and the talk was about building the largest in the world. Intermodal means "between modes" (road, rail, water, air).

Heartland Corridor
Bridge improvements have been made throughout La Porte County to accomodate the "double stack" container trains. This activity is related to other major rail infrastructure projects. The most spectacular are the tunnel projects, WHICH WERE IN PART FEDERALLY FUNDED.
